Little town south of the border
The passport reader was out of order
So we walk right in, sign reads “bienvenidos”
But I wonder if they even need us
Sidewalk dwellers selling blankets and trinkets
Streets are bustling, but I can hardly think yet
The local barber motions to me with a wide grin
Shouts “come in sir, you could use a trim”, he says:
7 dollars
And so I thought “so what?
I’m gonna get myself a Mexican haircut.”
7 US dollars
Ok, fine
And like that Mexican haircut,
I think about you all the time
I think about you all the time
And like that Mexican haircut,
I think about you all the time
Sweet Senorita serving tacos from a hot dish
Me gustaria uno, but I forgot my Spanish
Church door open, fills the air with a soft hymn
We believe the most when our prospects are the most grim
7 dollars
And so I thought “so what?
I’m gonna get myself a Mexican haircut.”
7 US dollars
Ok, fine
And like that Mexican haircut,
I think about you all the time
I think about you all the time
I think about you all the time
I think about you all the time
And like that Mexican haircut,
I think about you all the time
It’s the mundane things that make no sense
That I cherish the most and leave me defenseless
(short instrumental)
And I’d go back if I could
And I’d get you back if I could
I’d go back if I could
And you’d come back if you would
(short instrumental break)
7 Dollars – Mexican haircut

(I think about you all the time)
7 Dollars – Mexican haircut
Like that Mexican haircut,
I think about you all the time
From the forthcoming album, currently/tentatively titled "Don't Worry, Everything Is Going To Be Amazing"
The song was written during a quick day trip to Los Algodones in April 2019. Yes, it's completely factual that I got an impromptu $7 haircut, and that was the rather odd springboard for the song. But it's not really a song about men's grooming - it's taking the little mundane events in our lives, stepping outside of our normal comfort zones, the people we loved, the people we lost, and looking back at it all through the hazy lens of nostalgia. Or something like that.
It was originally written as a more rocking, Velvet Underground-y dirge of a song, until I started playing it on ukulele and settled on a dreamier, mariachi-lite arrangement. For those of you who are into such things, I've included the rougher, rawer demo version as well.
